Salem-Keizer Public School District

The Salem-Keizer Public School District (SKPSD) is currently the largest school district in the state of Oregon and serves ~40,000 students. During my time at the SKPSD, I worked in the Nutrition Services department and created a nutrition lesson plan for the school district, and was highly involved in the Head Start programs among various other activities and projects.

Some of the projects I completed at the SKPSD include:

  • Conducted an evaluation of two food products: I evaluated two different types of cheese based on nutrient and cost analysis.

  • Developed and presented an in-service: I worked with the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Coordinator to develop the in-service for the At-Risk Winter Break Supper Program Annual Training. This program provides a free meal and an educational activity in an organized, structured and supervised environment to eligible children ages 1 through 18.

  • Developed a nutrition curriculum: My preceptor asked me to develop a nutrition curriculum on How to Read A Nutrition Facts Label (Curriculum A) and MyPlate Guidelines (Curriculum B) for the elementary grades.

  • Observed and reviewed community-based programs: I visited several Head Start and Migrant Preschool Programs and was able to eat lunch with the children several times.

  • Developed an one-month menu: I developed a one-month menu for an elementary school which meets the DRI recommendations.

  • Developed a handout: I developed a handout on the difference between nutrient based and food based menu planning.

  • Created a poster with the nutrient facts for the cafeteria menu items.

Supervised Practice Time: 104 hours
