Silverton Hospital

Silverton Hospital is a small, rural 48-bed hospital located in Silverton, Oregon.  I worked under the sole dietitian conducting patient nutrition assessments and providing inpatient education. Associated with Silverton Hospital is Wellspring Health Center, which provides both individual and group education to people with cardiac health problems and diabetes by focusing on exercise, nutrition and stress management.

Some of the projects I completed at this rotation include:

  • Developing educational materials: I developed a handout for Wellspring's grocery store tours for the dietitians and participants to use. This handout had to double as an activity sheet and an informative handout for future use. This project was a challenge because I had several dietitians reviewing the project who had their own changes they wanted to make, but they didn't always coincide and I had to make a decision as to which changes would suffice and work for everyone.

  • Conducting a literature review on a specific disease state: I have always been fascinated by Prader-Willi syndrome and it was a topic that had not already been covered. In this paper, I explain the effect of PWS relation to the patients’ nutritional status and how preventative treatment can improve the quality of life for these persons.

  • Writing an article for publication in the hospital newsletter: I began this rotation in January and opted to write an article on making SMART New Year's resolutions.

  • Conducted an analysis of two nutrition products: For this project, I compared the cost and nutrition analysis of diabetic nutrition supplements the hospital used and recommended the use of  one of the products for the hospital.

  • Developed a 3-day menu for a target population: I developed a 3-day menu for the new children's Be Healthy program Wellspring was in the process of developing and selected appropriate recipes to meet the nutrition needs of the average 9-12 year old.

  • Lead a cooking class: "Cooking with Healthy Grains." View photos of the event above.

Supervised Practice Time: 120 hours
